Vegetable Garden: HOW MUCH TO PLANT?

I realize that we are in the depths of winter, but I KNOW I am not the only one thinking of this years gardens.

‘How much to plant?‘, is a tough question for any gardener to answer. Highly suggest starting with answering yourself the following questions:

• If you planted a garden last year – did you have enough? Or too much of a certain vegetable?
  
• How often do you eat a particular vegetable? Once a week or once per day?
  
• Does your household really love a certain vegetables?
  
• Do you have certain vegetables that are met with some resistance, as in ‘OH NO, not this again..’
  
• Do you plan to store/preserve any of this years harvest?
  

Take a look at the reference guide below, it is what we use to estimate how much to plant in our vegetable garden from year to year.

With this chart, feel free to customize it to your households needs. Say your family does not care for a certain vegetable, you can simply adjust the amount or omit it completely.

It is helpful for those who are looking at what seeds they have & are looking to order new for the upcoming growing season. I should bring it to your attention that the third column, is the amount of seed needed for 50 feet of garden row. If your garden row is smaller, take that into consideration. I found the average garden length is approximately 25 feet, so for the above chart one would divide the amount needed by 1/2.
